Multilingual Website SEO: How to Rank in Every Language
Hreflang, URL structure, right-to-left layouts and real localisation — the practical checklist we use to make one website rank in five languages.
Expanding into new markets is one of the fastest ways to grow — but only if customers can find you in their own language. A translated website is not automatically a multilingual SEO website. Search engines need clear signals about which page serves which audience.
1. Choose a clean URL structure
Use language folders such as /en/, /ar/ and /tr/ on one domain. Folders keep all authority on a single domain, are easy to maintain and are understood by every search engine. Avoid switching language with cookies or query parameters — crawlers will only ever see one version.
2. Implement hreflang correctly
Every page should list all of its translations, including itself, plus an x-default fallback. The tags must be reciprocal: if the English page points to the Arabic page, the Arabic page must point back. Missing return links are the most common reason hreflang is ignored.
- Add hreflang in the HTML head and in the XML sitemap.
- Only link pages that are true equivalents.
- Keep canonical tags self-referencing on each language version.
3. Localise, don't just translate
People search differently in each language. A literal translation of your English keyword may have no search volume at all in Russian or Arabic. Research keywords natively for every market and adapt titles, headings and examples — currency, units and cultural references included.
4. Build real RTL layouts for Arabic
Arabic users notice immediately when a layout is simply mirrored text in a left-to-right design. Use the dir="rtl" attribute, CSS logical properties and fonts designed for Arabic. A natural reading experience improves engagement — and engagement supports rankings.
5. Keep performance equal across languages
Every language version needs the same speed, structured data and internal linking. Translated pages are often forgotten during optimisation, which quietly weakens their visibility.
A multilingual site is not five copies of one website — it is one website that speaks five languages fluently.
Quick checklist
- Language folders on one domain
- Reciprocal hreflang with x-default
- Native keyword research per market
- Proper RTL design for Arabic
- Equal speed and schema on every version
